How to make your garden look more rustic

There are all sorts of aesthetics you can aim for with a garden – one very popular approach is to aim for a rustic scene.
This may be confusing to some people as any green space will be rustic to a certain extent, but what fans of this look are essentially going for is a vision of something like a British countryside cottage or rural Mediterranean vineyard.

So where do you start? Begin by working out how much space you are working with; any garden can be made to look rustic, but it helps to know the dimensions of your site before you start ordering in anything too large, like an over-sized table or garden ornament.

Garden Ornaments

Ornaments
Functionally limited but aesthetically beautiful items form a major part of the rustic look, since you can add a few weathered old ornaments to a well put-together garden and create a pretty effective scene.
Look for vintage ornaments or new ones that boast a timeless look – avoid anything that looks too obviously new, as this will contradict the rest of the setting. Where you can, integrate the ornaments with the garden, perhaps planting something in an old wheelbarrow, for example.

Floors and walls
The good thing about the rustic look is that you can quite happily allow things to get a little out of hand, so even if you see grass coming up around stepping stones, markers or paving slabs for the garden or plants dominating surrounding fencing, you have nothing to worry about – aside from ensuring that no structural damage is being done.
From time to time you will need to clean and tidy the floor and walls of your rustic garden, but for the most part it works best when everything is just slightly weathered.

Furniture
Continue your rustic theme with the garden furniture on display – try to keep to wood furniture pieces and perhaps some wrought iron items, as these tend to look the most timeless. Do not be afraid of including something a little more modern for the sake of comfort, but be sure to check that it does not look too incongruous in amongst your wild and weathered setting.
