Once you buy a new home it’s a very exciting time. The first thing you want to do is rush out and spend as much money as possible. There is a lot of furniture you need to buy and if you could, you would probably buy the whole store. Some people even get into serious debt because of it. Once you start buying stuff it’s like an addiction. You tell yourself it’s different because it’s a once in a lifetime chance to start out life in your new home in the best possible way. This is true, but it can be dangerous.
The truth is, you really shouldn’t be spending money you don’t have. Yes, it’s your new home and buying stuff is exciting, but it soon turns to heartache when you can’t even afford to put food on your table. There has to be another way. You should be able to get everything you need without going into debt and still be happy. You just need to plan properly. Use these tips to help you out and prevent you from breaking the bank.
Choose only what you need
There’s a difference between what you need and what you want. One is crucial in order to live comfortable, while the other is not. You should write down a list of everything you truly need. Things you can’t live without. A bed is a good example. If you don’t have one you will be sleeping on the floor. A bookshelf is not. Keep your books in a drawer. Have a list of everything you want and you can tick them off the list as you buy them further down the line.
Use what you already have
If this isn’t your first house you might already have furniture from your last house. You don’t need to go out and buy completely new stuff. Even if you lived with your parents there still might be some things you bought yourself. Instead of leaving them in your old room you can bring them with you. It will make a huge difference in what you need to spend. If you need to have new stuff you can buy it later when you have the money.
In order to save some money you might think it’s a good idea to buy cheaper things. It’s a bad idea. They will never last as long. They might even break a lot quicker than you think. This is where you really need to drill down on your priorities. Instead of buying everything you want, you should buy what you need but make sure they are absolute quality. That doesn’t mean they need to be the most expensive items in the store. Just good enough that they will last longer than 5 minutes.
Go on special deals
Most furniture stores will usually offer special deals. These are great for people moving into a new home because you can get everything you need for a great discount. It’s the only time you will really need to replace everything so they are good deals. Have a look on places like Craiglist and see if anyone is selling anything. Sometimes you can get really good deals on quality pieces of furniture. Don’t buy anything like mattresses, but a bed frame is a great example of something that doesn’t need to be brand new.
